As many of you may know or understand, as hunters we put a lot of pressure on ourselves each and every hunting season. Sure, it is a passion that has been honed from years spent in the outdoors and something that we love to do but at the same time it does cause some stress. So getting out there and not worrying about the outcome can be very refreshing. This type of hunt came about for me recently on my 2015 SD pronghorn hunt. I was also testing out the new Kryptek Inferno pattern and gear as well as my Proof Research Terminus rifle chambered in .300 Win Mag.
I set out to find a good representation of the species and I wasn’t worried about finding the biggest buck SD had to offer. I was headed out to some public land that I have never been to before in hopes that this area would produce an animal for me. Paying particular attention to my onXmaps GPS and smart phone software I was able to narrow it down to a good looking piece of property. The plan was to cover this ground and locate a pronghorn that would accompany my freezer at home.
It didn’t take long to locate a nice buck with his does shortly after daylight. A long walk and three stalks later I was able to settle my crosshairs on him at 300 yards. When the rifle went off I watched the buck drop in his tracks. After quartering and boning out the buck I was headed to find mule deer to try my luck on for the following day and a half. Stay tuned…
