Scouting was a huge key to my hunting in the high country of Wyoming. The hundreds of miles hiked and thousands of vertical feet climbed in order to prepare me for the season ahead was key to my success on this hunt! Various sponsors of mine helped make all of the hunt possible and I thank them for that!
My season in WY started on the 15th of September and after setting up camp I wasted no time getting after the elk. Things looked very promising at first and I was in the elk right away! Things almost always change on public land and you always hope to be the only hunter in the area but on this hunt that wasn’t the case. After day three I had a hard time getting into the elk but no problem finding other hunters that had the same idea I did! The bulls quit bugling and they seemed to disappear. I was frustrated and made a plan to move to another area to hunt after one last morning hunt.
It had snowed a good deal the night before and this allowed me to track the elk. After many miles I finally cut a bull’s tracks and began to sneak along to see what size of bull was making these tracks. I was able to locate the bull and stalk in for a 46 yard shot! Talk about a turn around for my mood!!
The pack-out was grueling but as always, well worth it! Can’t wait to get back after elk!
