As late October arrived, I found myself packing my truck and bags, shooting multiple shots a day, hard angles, quartering to and away, and broadside, and spending countless of hours watching the weather and reading midwest magazines. It was time to head to Kansas, my first ever Midwest trip, and I was jacked! The timing could not be any more perfect, the does were going to be coming into heat any day now, the bucks were cruising, and I felt like I could not be more prepared.
Hunting middle Georgia my whole life, I have been blessed to take some above average deer, where they scored 120-140″ and weighed around 150-170 on foot, and now I was traveling to a state where aa 160+ could walk out under your stand at any given second. Jonathan Matthews and myself chose to hunt with Dan Cross of JD Outfitters located in Ellis, Kansas with properties in Units 1,2,3,&4. When we arrived, Dan showed Jon and myself the properties we would be hunting, he showed us stand locations, enter/exit locations, and the predicted deer movement. We checked the trail cameras and were immediately blown away by the amount of shooters that were in the location. We were jacked!
On our first sit we saw a 170″ half a mile away, and the week just got better and better. Every sit we saw shooters, and passed good 3-4 year olds, we were just waiting on the right one, and that came on the last evening. At 4:30 I noticed some does running into the alfalfa field, and seconds later I heard grunting in the cedars and here came a shooter. He was pushing does all evening and bedded down 150 yards away with a doe teasing me. After throwing everything but the kitchen sink at him, I knew he was locked down with this doe, and the only way I would ever get a shot at him was if she led him right to me. As he chased them across the alfalfa field and into the wheat field a half a mile away I just knew the evening was going to be over with and I was eating a tag soup until next year. Right before camera light was over with I noticed some does coming from my right to the left and I couldn’t believe it, there he was head to the ground and dogging does right my way. He provided me with a 50 yard shot, and the arrow found it mark and he piled up shortly after. He ended up weighing close to 300 lbs, and scored 145″ my biggest buck to date. This trip was one to remember and this hunt will hold a special moment in my heart! This is a trip I highly recommend taking, you will not be disappointed.
