My big 6

My 2015 deer season started off all about this deer. From the first covert trail cam picture I got of him, I said I wanted this deer. Every time I hunted this farm, I saw him. The only time I had him inside 50 yards, I had my son with me, who just started bow hunting…first bow hunt actually. He made it to about 40 yards, and turned and walked away.  He had us both pretty shook up. The next chance I had to hunt him was opening weekend of muzzle loader season. My son had went to a friends house, but the wind was good, so I went after the big 6. I carried my bow as well as my muzzle loader because I really wanted to take this deer with my bow if the opportunity presented itself. Well, there was about 30 minutes of shooting light left when I heard the unmistakeable sound of a buck walking behind me. It was him and he was coming fast. My Sitka gear was doing its job as he passed behind my stand at less than 10 yards, well within bow range, but I wasn’t ready. I reached and took my bow off my        ez-hanger as he is about to walk into a road bed at 20 yards. I come to full draw as he steps almost into the clearing, but senses something is not right. He backs up and I let down, put my bow back, and grab the smoke pole. He makes a little circle, then walks back into the road bed at about 25 yards, well within bow range, but I already had the hammer back on the Encore because I wasn’t letting him get away today. I put a little pressure on the trigger, and the smoke rolled! He made two or three big jumps and crashed!!  Several texts were sent “big 6 down”! This was not my biggest deer to date, but I had defiantly put more work into him than any other ever. Very rewarding in the end to be able to say the hard work had payed off.

My Bio

I was born in 1980 and raised in the northern part of middle Tennessee, and that's where I plan on living the rest of my life as well. I grew up on a working family farm that provided a full time job for me from the time I was big enough until I was about 20 years old. I still find myself helping out from time to time as I still live on the farm, and it's good experience for my son. As far as me and my hunting, my uncle started taking me deer hunting when I was about 12 years old, and my love for the outdoors grew from there. I have always enjoyed hunting anything I could hunt, but the joy that being able to pass it on to my two kids is bringing me is amazing. That's my new passion...showing the outdoors to my kids! My wife and I enjoy taking the kids camping during the summer.  I also enjoy doing a little team roping when I have time.
