What do you do when you can’t go hunting? 3D Bowshoots!!

What do I do when all of my Archery hunts are over for 2015 and I’m patiently waiting for my 2016 hunts??  I get my practice on by competing in various indoor and outdoor 3D bowshoots!  My most recent competition at White Sands Missle Range, here in New Mexico landed me a 2nd place spot in  Women’s Open/Unlimited!! We shot 40 outdoor targets in 40-50 mph winds and got out just before the rain hit!!  Now if that isn’t great practice for hunting conditions, I don’t know what is!!

Not even a week later, I got to partner up with  our local High Desert Archery shop to host our NWTF-Women in the Outdoors 3D Turkey Bow Shoot/Ladies Night!  We had an awesome turn out! We shot 20 targets and had a turkey calling contest for a shot at a frozen turkey!  I gave away lots of NWTF goodies, it was a great opportunity to shoot our bows and incorporate hunting and conservation with ladies that share the same passions!! We also had a few ladies that were new to archery and hunting and hopefully we have them hooked!!

New Mexico has plenty of 3D shoots to participate in almost year-round so it keeps us in great practice for when it comes time for our real hunts!!

My next hunt will be my New Mexico Archery Deer hunt followed by my quest for my first javelina all starting in January, 2016.  Getting to have these 3D shoots prior to these hunts has helped keep me in good practice…not to mention it’s so FUN!!

My Bio

My name is Helen Butt. I am from New Mexico. I live for my life in the great outdoors. I absolutely love to hunt. There’s something about being able to harvest an animal and feed your family that is just amazing. When I'm not hunting, I travel to compete in various 3D archery bowshoots. I am currently the NWTF Women in the Outdoors Coordinator for the State of New Mexico as well as our local NWTF Chapter President. I strongly believe wildlife conservation is vital, individual hunters make such a big contribution towards ensuring the future of many species of wildlife and habitat for the future.  My family and I are all members of the NWTF, the NRA the RMEF  and are active in mentoring our local Youth 4-H  and YHEC shooting sports competitions. It is important that our youth become involved and participate in hunting and that hunting mentors teach them what fair chase and ethical conduct and conservation is all about. I have also created an all female hunting/archery group called “Gals at Full Draw Outdoors". Empowering women and encouraging them to hunt and enjoy life in the great outdoors is my mission!
